The range and performance of a BMW TwinPower Turbo engine coupled with the efficiency of an electric motor: the BMW 740e Hybrid combines the best of both worlds. Vehicle concept.

BMW has created a luxury sedan with remarkable fuel consumption figures and renowned BMW driving characteristics. The eDrive badge on the rear indicates an electric drive, which in pure electric mode gives a range of up to 48 km under NEDC testing.

Even in combined mode, the BMW 740e Hybrid produces only 50 g/km. The high-voltage battery is housed below the luggage compartment, leaving plenty of space for bulky luggage. The result is a future-orientated vehicle that is second to none.

Individual driving behaviour.

The BMW 740e Hybrid has various driving modes, allowing the driver to dictate the fuel consumption. Fuel consumption depends not only on driving modes, but also on personal driving style. When the battery is fully charged, up to 48 km can be covered (under NEDC test cycle) purely electric before the BMW TwinPower Turbo petrol engine kicks in.

When driving in the city, the BMW 740Le and BMW 740Le xDrive iPerformance exploit the strengths of the plug-in hybrid to the full. Short distances can be covered in the fully electric mode, and driving in the hybrid mode enables combined fuel consumption of 128.4 - 134.5mpg (113 – 117mpg with xDrive), with COemissions of 49 - 50 g/km (54 - 56 g/km with xDrive).

The BMW 740e iPerformance and BMW 740Le xDrive iPerformance are the ideal cars for commuters too. Using an average of 56 to 70mpg for a journey of 31 to 37 miles, its fuel consumption is markedly lower than that of other cars in their class. The BMW 740e iPerformance and BMW 740Le xDrive allow you to enjoy the luxury of a BMW 7 Series model with the added bonus of excellent fuel economy.

Intelligent energy management.

Intelligent energy management is key to the BMW iPerformance concept. The system coordinates the interaction of all of the drive components to produce the best possible efficiency with great driving dynamics. Intelligent energy management optimises the hybrid drive's power-efficiency by predictively choosing the appropriate drive. For example, navigation data is used to identify in advance the sections of the route and driving situations that are best suited for the electric motor or for charging the battery.

When the combustion engine is being inefficient, the system makes it produce additional power. This is used to create electricity for the battery, which can later be used for electric driving or supporting the combustion engine. The system also controls the electric motor/generator, so that kinetic energy is transformed into electrical energy during coasting and when braking. In combination with ECO PRO mode, intelligent energy management adapts all vehicle systems, such as air conditioning, to be fuel-consumption conscious and highly efficient.

The eDrive button allows the driver to choose between three different electric drive modes. When starting the vehicle, the AUTO eDrive (hybrid) mode is active by default. The MAX eDrive mode allows a purely electric driving up to 140 km/h, where permitted. In the Battery Control mode, the saved electric energy is retained for later use.

When starting the vehicle, the AUTO eDrive mode, i.e the hybrid mode, is active by default, enabling use of the electric drive. Depending on the load and the electric battery's charge level, the vehicle uses only electric energy up to a speed of 80 km/h, where permitted. A power meter display informs the driver of the vehicle's electrical consumption, and the point at which additional power demands will cause the combustion engine to switch on automatically.

In the MAX eDrive mode – the purely electric mode – the electric drive provides maximum output. The driver can press the accelerator to its full extent without activating the combustion engine, and the vehicle can reach a top speed of 140 km/h, where permitted. If yet more power is required, the combustion engine can be switched on at any time via the gear lever or by pressing the accelerator.

In SAVE BATTERY / BATTERY CONTROL mode, the vehicle is only powered by the combustion engine until the battery is charged to a level selected by the driver. The saved electric energy is reserved for further electric driving.

With the destination in the navigation system, predictive energy management analyses data such as speed limits and the current traffic situation along the route. The system then uses the purely electric driving mode along those sections of the route where it's most worthwhile - in urban traffic for example.

Whether using conventional household socket or a BMW i Wallbox – charging the BMW 740e Hybrid could not be easier. Numerous public charging stations are available for energy top ups when you're away from home.

The vehicle can be charged via any conventional household power socket and has a 'full tank' after approximately five hours. The car's charging port is located behind a flap on the front left side, and all that's needed for charging is the included cable, which stores safely in the rear left section of the luggage compartment.

A wall-mounted charging station is available as an accessory and offers increased charging power, for faster charging.

The charging status of the battery can be checked via the multicoloured LED light ring on the socket, or by using the BMW ConnectedDrive App. From a wall-mounted BMW i Wallbox, it can take as little as approximately 2.5 hours for an empty high-voltage battery to recharge completely. 

Charging at public charging stations is available for the BMW 740e Sedan. Charging time varies based on several factors, such as the strength of the current and number of active devices consuming electricity in the vehicle.

A special gasket ring protects the charging port and plug from the elements. LED light rings on the charging port make the charging status visually clear. The navigation system and BMW ConnectedDrive App give the driver information about the location and availability of suitable charging stations.


Always connected to your BMW: Via smartphone (iOS or Android), with eDrive Services, which includes BMW Remote Services such as remote locking and the ability to perform hybrid-specific functions. This ensures that you always have an overview of the consumption and efficiency values of your hybrid. BMW eDrive Services for every situation, which can be used inside the vehicle – and outside.

The BMW Connected App for iOS and Android displays detailed information about the current status of the BMW – such as the vehicle's location, the battery level and remaining range.

The charging procedure can be controlled remotely via the week-to-view timer, and the vehicle's cabin temperature remotely adjusted prior to your next journey. Destinations, points of interest and the location of charging stations can be easily sent from the application directly to the vehicle.

Get into a comfortably cool car in summer and a warm car in winter – pre-conditioning in the BMW 740e makes that possible. Thanks to an electrical refrigerant compressor and a tankless electrical heater, the automatic air conditioning functions almost silently, even when the engine is off. Three departure times can be programmed for every day of the week.

Half an hour before the planned departure, heating, cooling and ventilation is adjusted to the selected temperature. The system is operated by the iDrive Controller inside the car, or via a compatible smartphone using the BMW ConnectedDrive App.

Provided that the high-voltage battery has a sufficient charge, the stationary air conditioning functions regardless of whether the vehicle is being externally charged or not.

Interior comfort and luxury.

The BMW 7 Series takes luxury motoring into the next age, yet retains touches of timeless elegance, with hand crafted wood inlays and hand-stitched leather upholstery. With their innovative drivetrain, the BMW iPerformance models are even more forward looking, but still have the luxury and comfort with which the BMW 7 Series is synonymous.

Unique to the BMW iPerformance models is the door sill embellishment, while the 'e' suffix on the boot denotes the hybrid electric drive. The instrument cluster features additional dials to highlight the amount of remaining charge and projected range, while buttons to access the various driving modes fall naturally to hand.
